Denial, cost, and vanity are biggest barriers to use of hearing aids. Seniors who wear hearing aids have better family relationships and improved mental heath. The survey of 2,300 hearing impaired adults age 50 and older found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety, and paranoia and were less likely to participate in organized social activities, compared to those who wear hearing aids.

Not being able to communicate well with others can cause arguments, depression, loneliness, and a sense of helplessness. Stress of hearing loss can lead to heart trouble, enhance dementia, and make it difficult to overcome an injury or surgery.
If you find yourself missing much of what is said when someone is talking to you in close proximity, or you can't hear the television when others say it is too loud, have your hearing tested. Ask friends and relatives if they think you can't hear well.
